Water and Sewer usage rate to increase 15%...
Public Meetings to consider 2010 Water & Sewer Rates and 2010 Budget will be held on March 30 to consider the proposed 5% increase
in the base charge, 15% increase in the consumption charge. The budget spin is 0% tax rate increase, 5.5% overall tax levy increase. Residents may wish to take a good, hard look at
the overall financial situation of this Town, particularly as this is election year.
Ottawa Valley Rail line to close within the month: On January 5, 2010, Lanark County
learned that Canadian Pacific Railway was planning to close the OVR line from Smiths Falls to Petawawa as quickly as possible. There are 104 miles of track and multiple
trestles between these communities. Mississippi Mills has 14 railroad crossings and three major trestle crossings (two in Pakenham and one in Almonte) along the route. Read the notice on the Town’s website.
Non-motorized nature trail doesn’t gain support:
The MVFN made a presentation to Council last November, recommending specific actions to designate one section of Ramsay 3B as a non-motorized
nature trail. A large number of residents attended the public meeting on March 11, 2010. Most in attendance rejected this proposal, citing that a public roadway, un-opened, unmaintained or not is still
a public roadway – and supporting the idea means “handing over the use of this public road to what amounts to a private club.” One attendee concluded that there is “no appetite for any designated trails
on unused road allowances in Mississippi Mills”. To be continued?
