Limiting the Cosmetic use of Pesticides Bylaw

July 2005 - Online Petition for Mississippi Mills:

http://www.petitiononline.com/MMRApest/petition.html

Proposed Town Pesticide Control Bylaw

The town will be discussing the bylaw at the August 2 2005 Planning & Economic Committee meeting.

The bylaw is available at: http://www.mississippimills.ca/localgovt/docs/PesticideApril15_2005.pdf

The MMRA's Position

The MMRA board has formally endorsed the following position:

The Pro Pesticide Use Side

There is a letter from Peter Marsh to the Town Council (presented at the Jan 12 2004 Committee meeting), stating opposition to limiting pesticide use. Copies are available at the Almonte library in the Jan 12 2004 Committee meeting information package, or from the town.
The Canadian Golf Superintendants Association (CGSA) has provided the following form letters for golf courses and members to send to councillors regarding their opposition to a pesticide by-law. It is interesting that the CGSA states “there is no need to acknowledge CGSA” in their address to members.

Check out the "SPEAKING NOTES FOR TELEPHONE CALLS TO COUNCILLORS" section! Many of the same points as brought up by Mr. Marsh above.

In reading the form letters, most points can be disputed with studies done by reputable agencies or organizations (Canadian Cancer Society, City of Toronto Study by the Medical Officer of Health, etc.) See below.

The Against Cosmetic Use of Pesticides side

Here is a document from Toronto authored by the Medical Officer of Health, ‘Healthy Choices About Lawn Care Pesticides’. A good reference document.

Just reading the bibliography is scary enough.

Toronto passed their by-law and in early December won a court challenge in the Ontario Superior Court from Croplife Canada, an industry lobby group (manufacturers and distributors). The Ontario ruling conformed with the 2001 Supreme Court of Canada decision regarding a pesticide ban in Hudson, Quebec.

In other words, banning pesticide use for cosmetic applications is a a perfectly legal thing to do.
