Bicycles
Mountain bikes can be donated to Bikes for Haiti, for fixing and shipment, or for parts
Non-mountain bikes that are in repairable condition can be left beside the metal scrap bin at Stanley Sanitation, Almonte. Often people will pick them up for personal reuse.
Really rusty ones can go in the metal scrap bin at Stanley Sanitation, Almonte.
re-Cycles Bicycle Coop at 473 Bronson Avenue (at Gladstone) in Ottawa, takes bikes in any condition - none are turned away. That's their credo!
Check out their website for details on donating to re-Cycles. They will even take your old toothbrushes for cleaning bike parts!
Brush and Yard Stuff
Can be recycled at no cost at the Howie Landfill site and the Pakenham Depot.
In the fall "clean" leaves can be brought to Al Potvin's Leaf Pile on his property on Carrs St in Almonte for composting. The composted result is sold for charitable causes.
For the Town of Almonte, Villages of Pakenham, Clayton, Blakeney, and Appleton, the town also offers free Spring and Fall yard waste pickup, and after Christmas they offer a roadside tree pickup. This information is posted in advance of the appropriate season on the Town's website.
Cardboard
The Town of MM accepts boxboard and cardboard in the curbside blue bins for residential households.
Drop off bins are located at the Howie Road Landfill Site, Pakenham Recycle Depot and Ramsay Garage for households and commercial residents.
Stanley Sanitation, Almonte has large bins for cardboard. Many times it's a lot easier for large amounts, rather than trying to cut it all up for curbside pickup.
Computers and Electronics
The Town has no formal e-waste program and recommends that residents use Twenty-Twelve Electronics Recycling Inc (see below).
Twenty-Twelve Electronics Recycling Inc http://www.tter.ca/

Plastics
Effective June 1, 2010 residents of Mississippi Mills will be able to put ALL, (yes, all!) #1 and #2 plastics
(tubs and lids) in the curb-side blue bins. In addition, residents of MM can now also
collect #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 plastics and drop them off at the Howie Landfill site and Pakenham Depot during operating hours.
Note: Unfortunately the extended plastic categories accepted by the Town are limited to food and beverage containers, not plastic bags (grocery bags are generally categorized under #2 and plastic bread, milk, etc bags, under #4) or any styrofoam.
Community volunteers (in the the villages and in Almonte neighbourhoods) are attempting to cooperate in an effort to collect and transport non-Blue Bin recyclables from their areas to the municipal drop-offs. Interested residents should join the MMRA's Yahoo Discussion Group to keep informed about local recycling activities.
The City of Ottawa offers road-side pick up of a much wider range of plastics recycling than does Mississippi Mills at present. Many locals who work or have friends in Ottawa, and are keen and able, arrange to take their plastics with them for recycling!
Consult the City of Ottawa Take-It-Back! directory to discover which retailers in your area will take back plastic bags and styrofoam.
